2024 Fantasy Outlook
Johnson set career highs across the board in 2022 with 42 catches for 508 yards and seven touchdowns on 65 targets, but he took a step back in 2023, failing to get on the same page with new Saints quarterback Derek Carr for much of the season. Johnson saw only six fewer targets but dipped to 368 yards and four touchdowns. His 6.2 yards per target marked Johnson’s lowest total since his four-catch rookie year in 2020, as the converted wide receiver was left to compete for shorter targets with Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas while speedsters Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed stretched the field on the outside. That whole group minus Thomas is expected to return in 2024, plus jack of all trades Taysom Hill remains on hand to cut into Johnson’s playing time at tight end. Johnson played at least 70 percent of snaps in eight of his 13 appearances last season, but unless the 6-foot-4 tight end’s red-zone usage climbs substantially compared to last season’s eight red-zone targets, Johnson will have a hard time carving out enough volume to produce consistently. ANALYSIS
Johnson led the Saints' tight ends in receiving yards for the third week in a row, and he finished with 15 catches (on 22 targets) for 178 yards and two touchdowns over that span. This marks an encourgaing ending to a rather up-and-down campaign for the 27-year-old tight end. Across 13 games this season, Johnson tallied 37 receptions (on 59 targets) for 368 yards and four touchdowns, marking a slight downtick from his career-best 2022 season.

Lofty goals for '23
Johnson, who put up career-best numbers last season, is aiming to reach the top tier of the tight end position in 2023, John DeShazier of the team's official site reports. "I've always seen myself being a good player," he said. "That's how I've always carried myself, going into high school and college, me being a good player but I know I always could be great. That's the tier I'm trying to break into, being great."
ANALYSIS
The fourth-year pro came into his own last season, producing a 42-508-7 line on 65 targets. Johnson now gets a significant upgrade at quarterback in Derek Carr, who targeted him frequently throughout offseason practices and training camp. The converted receiver also credits Tight End U, a three-day annual seminar founded by the Chiefs' Travis Kelce, the 49ers' George Kittle and retired Pro Bowler Greg Olsen, for accelerating his learning curve at the position.

Johnson scored seven touchdowns in a seven-game span in the middle of last season. He didn’t find the end zone outside of that stretch and finished outside the top 10 at tight end with 11 targets inside the 20-yard line, yet he was tied for third in touchdowns among tight ends. Apart from the TD heroics, Johnson ranked outside the top 15 in targets (65), catches (42) and yards (508). He played at least 66 percent of offensive snaps on 10 different occasions, though never more than 78 percent. Johnson could offset some likely TD catch regression with the help of a QB upgrade after the Saints signed Derek Carr, whose former teammate Foster Moreau was brought in to replace Adam Trautman as the inline tight end. Johnson still figures to get most of the TE snaps in passing situations but projects as only the fourth or fifth receiving option overall in an offense with WRs Chris Olave, Michael Thomas and Rashid Shaheed and RB Alvin Kamara.
