2024 Fantasy Outlook
O’Connell will battle Gardner Minshew to start this season for the Raiders. A 2023 fourth-round pick, O’Connell began last season as the No. 3 QB only to be named starter Week 9 over both Jimmy Garoppolo and backup Brian Hoyer after coach Josh McDaniels was fired. O’Connell’s arm is merely average, and while he had his moments, he was not prolific. He ranked 28th in on-target percentage (68.5) for a 62.1 completion percentage that ranked 27th. And it’s not like he threw a ton of deep passes -- 50.1 percent of his attempts came within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage (4th most) with only 8.7 percent going 20-plus yards (22nd). His 6.5 YPA ranked 25th, and he threw just 12 TD passes in 11 games. O’Connell also is immobile -- zero scramble yards last season. Minshew, who signed a two-year $25 million contract after 13 starts for the Colts, is more efficient and at least offers scrambling upside. Other than Davante Adams, the surrounding talent isn’t much (though the team has quality tight ends in Michael Mayer and first-round pick Brock Bowers), and both QBs have a new offensive coordinator in Luke Getsy, who fielded one of the league’s worst passing offenses the last two years in Chicago. Early leader in competition
Coach Antonio Pierce said O'Connell will take the first snap over Gardner Minshew in the Raiders' upcoming quarterback competition, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Pierce praised O'Connell's work so far this offseason, mentioning how he's "changing his body, his work ethic, being here every day, blocking out the outside noise." He did also talk up Minshew and make it clear that Las Vegas considers the starting role up for grabs, saying a quarterback competition is good for motivation across the roster. O'Connell led the Raiders to a 5-5 record as a rookie last season, and this offseason, he'll work to take a step forward and build increased chemistry with Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers and rookie tight end Brock Bowers.

Gets first snap over Minshew
O'Connell is currently running ahead of offseason addition Gardner Minshew in the Raiders' quarterback room, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The second-year pro has impressed head coach Antonio Pierce, who noted O'Connell has changed "his body, his work ethic" this offseason and is displaying improved confidence and focus. O'Connell was promoted to the starting job for the rest of the 2023 season by Pierce when he took over for Josh McDaniels following a Week 8 loss, with O'Connell going 5-5 as a starter and tossing eight touchdowns without an interception over the final four contests of the campaign.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
O'Connell turned a preferred walk-on spot at Purdue into a pair of second-team All-Big Ten honors by the time he left, completing 635 of 939 pass attempts for 7,202 yards and 50 touchdowns versus 24 picks in 24 games over his final two seasons with the Boilermakers. The Raiders subsequently spent a fourth-round pick on O'Connell (who will be 25 years old by the time Week 1 arrives) in the 2023 NFL Draft, and coach Josh McDaniels likely views O'Connell as a developmental project behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo, with veteran Brian Hoyer's experience probably giving him the edge for primary backup duties.
